In Reply to: Marantz DV-8300, any reviews or observations yet posted by little-al on September 11, 2002 at 16:12:01:
My local Marantz dealer demoed one for me. I did not directly compare it to anything else, but in absolute terms, I thought the sound was pretty good through some decent quality speakers--they were either Paradigm or B&W's in the $1000-2000/pair range. I listened to Lucky Man by ELP on DVD-A, and it sounded quite good. I also listened to a newer recording by a different artist on multichannel SACD, and it sounded even better, but it could have just been the difference in the original recordings themselves. As far as video, the picture was fine but did not necessarily blow me away. With material I am more familiar with, I'm sure it would outperform my little Pioneer DV-414 DVD player on my Sony digital TV with the Marantz's progressive scan. My opinion is that this player likely offers a good blend of performance and value.
Follow Ups:
Does any one knows how much does the Marantz DVD DV-8300 cost?
And where can I buy it?
Thanks Todd =)It seems that not too many folks have had the opportunity to see the unit in person, as I guess it's too new. So any first-hand experience is great to hear.
I agree, that for a combo player, I am not expecting the ultimate performance in every category, DVD, DVD-A, CD, and SACD. However for ~$1000 I *am* expecting it to perform well above average, and I think that's reasonable. But I won't buy until I can get some more data =)
So, hopefully as people run across this post and/or just over time, we'll see a few more posts and maybe some links to formal reviews as they develop. I haven't personally found any.
I am also very curious to find some online dealers with the 8300 in stock in North America, that are not asking the USD$1500 MSRP. One fella in HK posted in another forum that they picked one up for ~USD$900 and that seems much more realistic.
Well, thanks again, and anything else anyone else can offer on the DV-8300 is much appreciated =)
