You might look at the B&K AVR 305. They just came out with the new model, (the 507), and there should be good discounts on the 305. I just got one for $2200, so it's in the ballpark.

hi garth,thanks for the tip, it sounds like a good mid-price option but a little more than i want to spend. i wound up getting a mint used Rotel RSP-966 for $699. it doesn't have DTS EX or Pro Logic II but is otherwise pretty similar to the 1066. i was actually really really disappointed with it when i first got it - poor circuit layout, unspectacular decoding quality, mediocre analog preamp performance, annoying user interface - but after learning to live with its compromises and adjust to the sound quality a little it's proven to be satisfactory. it still falls short of what i was expecting but for under $1k i don't think i really had too many choices. it probably still sounds better than the decoder/preamp sections of most receivers at any rate.
