because the surround processing are done externally in the receiver or pre/proc. The DD/DTS outputs in bitstream format that needs special processing not available on regular DACs.They output the native format CD being 16/44.1, for others, some litmits the output resolution to 24/48 to limit duplication.
SACD only has analog out for now
DVD-A has digital output via either Meridian's proprietary connection to their components, or via firewire to specially equipped processors. But most of the players now use analog output.
