hii am starting my first foray into home theater. my plan is to go with the Totem Dreamcatcher 5.1 speaker system and a Sony receiver. I am able to buy Sony products at a discount and I want some advice on which receiver to buy. i live in a small apartment and have a separate 2 channel system that's pretty decent (Symphonic Line amplification, AP virgo speaks, etc.) I don't want to buy the top of the line receiver from Sony, as these things seem to depreciate faster than a new Cadillac. Any recommendations?

Check out the Sony STR-DA7ES. You can get it from various Internet distributors for around $1200 and it compares favorably to receivers costing considerably more (for example, Denon AVR-4802), and it has excellent surround-sound options when being used for HT purposes. Unless you plan on buying new electronics every year or so, I wouldn't worry about the depreciation factor. If you buy something really nice, like the STR-DA7ES, you'll have no need to upgrade for a number of years.
