If you want a new wide screen it's going to be a HDTV.I got a Philips 9818 direct view for $1550 delivered from Harton Innovations and I love it. I'll never go back to 4:3. Anything smaller than 34" is too small for DVD IMO.
This set will go eventually into the den. I'm still waiting for DLP, plasma or LCoC technology to come down in price before I pop for a large display. I almost bought a Panny 42" RP for $1499, but it would be large for the den.
If you get a RP, be sure to adjust it with Video Essentials disc or AVIA after it breaks in (500 hours)...it makes a BIG difference. A professional ISF calibration will also be well worth the money down the road. Most RPs look terrible in stores, but they are very tweakable.
Head over to avsforum.com or hometheaterforum.com for discussions on various sets.
