The Sony ES Receivers have pre-outs for all channels. I use the receiver to power the center and surrounds and have pre-outs for the main r/l channels going to a PSAudio HCA-2 amp.I did it this way to enjoy the benefits of home theater while still having a VERY nice 2 channel system for music. I have a Sony DVP-S9000ES as my source for DVDs and SACDs.
The ES Receiver required dome tweaking before i was happy with it as a pre-amp for music, but its now fabulous for that. I replaced the captive PC with an IEC socket. from the IEC to the tranformer i installed a pair of Bybee filters. I am now using a PSAudio Prelude PC from the Receiver to an Ultimate Outlet.
So, i don't use the receiver for MC music, only for MC Movies. I am VERY happy with my current setup and find myself doing only minor tweaks now. Since the surround is only used for movies, i use dipole speakers for my surrounds (BA VRMXs) and am very happy with the results.
