To briefly answer your Q's:Stick to direct radiators for the surround/side speakers for good 5.1/7.1 reproduction.
DR's will avoid the diffusion that can occur with dipole in the rear/side.
Most mid to high level AVRs will have preamp outputs for all channels.
It's usually the entry level/ el cheapo stuff that leaves out preamp outs or has limited outs.
