My criterion for a good receiver included good performance into lower impedance loads, option of selecting subwoofer crossover frequency and preamp outputs for all channels. After examining Yamaha and Onkyo I decided on Denon AVR-3803. But I found out that service is a problem in my country and looked around more. I bumped into a Pioneer Elite VSX 45TX (VSX-D2011 in Europe). It looks as good as the Denon and probably sounds a little better. Cosmetically, it definitely looks better. Denon has advantage of having the option of s-video-to-component video conversion. But I believe the amp section is slightly better on Pioneer 45TX. I'm planing to purchase the Pioneer. I don't think either Yamaha or Onkyo have better sounding models. I also find the fixed (90 Hz.) sub crossover frequency on all Yamaha models, including the flagship models, a big handicap.
