We just remodeled our kitchen and are thinking about replacing the old 13" morning news TV that sits on the counter with a similar sized LCD TV as the finishing touch. What should we look for? Any value stand outs? Any serious deficiencies in lower cost brands like Samsung? Can we expect the same service life from an LCD screen as a CRT? A search showed lots of posts on big LCD sets and projectors but little on small LCD sets.

You should be able to get some great deals on the Samsung 150MP (15", around $350) or 170MP (17", around $500). These are multi function monitors which function as a computer monitor, a TV (have built in TV tuner) and have two additional inputs - which will allow you to hook up a VCR and DVD. I had the 150MP and later upgraded to the 170MP and am extremely happy with the picture quality.
The 170MP comes with a three year warranty.
