I've had both the B&K Ref 30 and the Anthem AVM 20 in my system, and I think the Anthem is the best pre-pro out there. Bang for the buck. There are more expensive ones, but they're not significantly better for the significant extra cash. The analog bypass is truly excellent in either, but the Anthem is more flexible.
Follow Ups:
Wish it could be more but I have to upgrade the whole path: source, pre-pro and power amp (don't have one now) Later I might create a separate path: source, preamp, power amp for music but for now I will have to use a pre-pro for both HT and Music.
I might actually go the preamp/power amp route first while I wait for the HD-DVD/DVI enabled units to become available in my price range. I would just use my lowfi Sony source for now. Thanks!!
You might be able to find a B&K Ref 30 used for around that price. I'm not familiar with models from Rotel or Adcom, but they might have analog bypass. I think those units might be around your budget, i.e. if you have to buy new.
