Here is a system thats hard to beat for the $$. B&W 602 fronts, B&W 601 surrounds, LCR center. Those speakers can be found all used and are very hard to beat for the money. As far as preamp/amp- B&K REF30, B&K 5channel amp. I like B&K for the sound and connections, plus its very easy to use. I'd personally try to get a B&K REF 50 if you want the "new" formats dolby ex, dts es etc... There is a great system in your budget.

The B&W with B&K is a great system but good luck finding it for your budget of 4K. I would recommend a good quality receiver, Marantz, Integra, Denon, or Yamaha. Your choice they sound so close these days. Speakers- I would recommend the Monitor Audio Bronze or silver system. What Hi-Fi magazine just rated the bronze 2 the best, over b&w. I have the Monitor Gold running off a Marantz SR7300ose and they sound great. For a subwoofer, Velodyne CHT, for the money will give you the biggest boom for the buck. That package should leave you enough to get some decent speaker cables- AudioQuest or Kimber would be my recommendations
