The cable has 4 wires (two white, two yellow) in a PVC jacket. I'm assuming that all 4 wires are meant to be used as one, where you would have 8 wires per speaker (4 + and 4 -)but is it ok to split the cable to make a 2+, 2- wire cable from the 4?? IE have one white and one yellow for positive and the other white and other yellow for negative? Or do they really need to be kept together as is in the sleeve? FYI I'm not running them through walls or anything... in fact I'll probably be removing the pvc jacket regardless.
Its just a cheapy home theater system.... it came with something like 20gauge generic color coded stuff.... its about as thick as dental floss.

Just make sure that you have the same + and - on each end and that you're using a sufficient gauge wire for whatever length you're running to avoid potential impedance problems and other nasties.
