I tried going the route of a cheaper outboard DD processor (Technics 500 from memory) but found it totally unsatisfactory. Many people are happy with DD incorporated in their DVD players. You do not tell us the use for it you have in mind. If it is for DVD, then get a player with it incorportaed. Otherwise, go for a receiver with inbuilt processing - the best option IMO.
Follow Ups:
I didn't know that it could be incorporated inside the dvd player. Are these dvd players expensive? All that my receiver can do now is pro logic. Would getting a harman kardon adp303 off ebay for 100 bucks be worth it. Please excuse my dummieness.
... the adp303 is not really as cheap as it might seem.Your best bet is to buy a receiver with all Dolby (including the new pro logic II) processing included. Do a Google net search to find out more. The alternative path you look like taking is messy and unsatisfactory. Get a receiver that takes inputs from your CD player, your DVD player and anything else. The remote for the receiver will then give you good control over most functions. With its inbuilt amps all you need to do is connect the output to your speakers - a lot simpler than heaps of interconnects & messy manual switches.
Things on e-bay are cheap for a reason. In the case of gear like the hk model you mention, it has been superceded by far better gear. The Yamaha RX-V640 at $499 (you could probably shop for less), Denon AVR-1803 (same price) or better still the Denon AVR-2803 look like a much much better proposition for you.
Trust me, you will mess about, have an unsatisfactory set up and end up spending more than jumping in and biting the bullet now.
