The alternative path you look like taking is messy and unsatisfactory. Get a receiver that takes inputs from your CD player, your DVD player and anything else. The remote for the receiver will then give you good control over most functions. With its inbuilt amps all you need to do is connect the output to your speakers - a lot simpler than heaps of interconnects & messy manual switches.
Things on e-bay are cheap for a reason. In the case of gear like the hk model you mention, it has been superceded by far better gear. The Yamaha RX-V640 at $499 (you could probably shop for less), Denon AVR-1803 (same price) or better still the Denon AVR-2803 look like a much much better proposition for you.
Trust me, you will mess about, have an unsatisfactory set up and end up spending more than jumping in and biting the bullet now.
