I'm considering dumping cable for Dish Network and would appreciate any input on the best approach; through a retailer like Circuit City, through a local Satellite installer/dealer, or with DishNetwork corporate via the net? Any pitfalls/advantages relative to the source? Or just go for the best deal? Any big discriminators between Dish and other satellite providers? I'll be into HDTV by year's end so thats going to be an issue too.
Follow Ups:
I'm getting ready to dump Charter cable; I bought the sales pitch from Dish Network which included free equipment and installation. I'm still trying to figure out what the catch is. I'll be able to directly compare satellite vs. that allegedly horrible, analog and highly compressed digital cable channels. Charter PQ has always been a question mark, but I expect to answer that question real soon.I ordered dish over the phone and let them worry about installation arrangements. A local dealer tried to talk me out of it suggesting horror stories about "free" installations. I'll find out what happens this Sunday.
As a side benefit, the Dish HD receiver I'll be getting is supposed to have DVI. If so, this would give me a chance to see how well DVI works with a probable mass-market source. It'd be even better if it could upsample standard broadcast to 720p...
Satelite SD PQ is better than digital cable SD PQ, but not by much. They both stink and are both highly compressed. On my 60 inch HDTV, regular programs such as "Friend" and "Queen of Hearts" were unwatcheable due to poor PQ of DISH network.Just simple over-the-air digital signal via OTA antenna looks MUCH better for the same programs. You Must get OTA antenna for half-way-decent SD digital PQ.
HD is fantastic no matter where, cable, DISH, OTA and basically indistinguisheable. But you will still want OTA antenna for OTA HD b/c DISH HD package will not give you NBC, ABC, UPN, or local HD programming (CBS IS possible in some areas).
As far as DISH HDTV receiver you are getting, it's likely an 811. It does "output" up to 1080i, but the above-mentioned crappy compressed SD digital channels look just as crappy "upsampled."
