Ok folks, I'm a bit of a rookie and I need help. I've got a DVD, CD, VCR and A/V Reciever all hooked up and it worked pretty well. I'm looking to upgrade my TV to HDTV and widescreen. While I was shopping, I was told by the salesperson that my standard RCA video, l audio and r audio connections would not produce the Dobly 5.1 sound properly. Is it necessary to have a Dolby 5.1 output from your device to your reciever to get the full effect?I also would like to use the optical o/p from my CD and the digital coax from my DVD, but I can't get the signal passed through my receiver. Is it true that all the audio and video is contained on the digital coaxial line? What am I doing wrong? I did all the set ups on my Pioneer VSX-309 for the optical and coax, but nada!

Don't feel bad Randy. It took me about a year before I had all the connections and settings right with my first digital receiver. I'm looking at a poor picture of the back panel of yours right now and it looks like it has one coaxial input and one optical input near the top, just left of center. It is only the audio that is passed through these inputs, no video at all. As far as I know, an HDMI connection is the only one that will pass both. You might just have to enable the digital output from your dvd and cd player. Look in the audio menus and play with the settings for digital audio. It's really hard to see but it looks like the receiver's inputs are just named "Coax" and "Opt". This might mean that they're assignable in the receiver's settings. If you already took care of that then it might just be a faulty receiver. This is all I can help without actually seeing being there. Good luck.
Thanks for your help and moral support. I did eventually get it all figured out. Now I'm rockin' the house and keeping the kids up at night. Sure is a fun toy. Now that I have this problem licked and know what I COULD have, I'm chomping at the bit to upgrade everything - Oh, the never ending cycle of new toy acquisition!!!!
