Philips' CRT HDTVs have a very good stretch mode setting where the picture is only stretched toward the edges horizontally. The central half of the image is not stretched.

Vertically the image is larger than the screen (which reduces amount of stretch needed on the horizontal) and can be adjusted up or down approx. 10% of the vertical height.
