Since my display is 720p native, one would think feeding it 720p over DVI would provide the best picture. Turns out 1080i over DVI from satellite receiver gave me better PQ than 720p from this same receiver suggesting to me the the display was doing a better job converting 1080i (or even 720p broadcast stuff?) to the displays native 720p resolution than the source.I strongly suspect the story will change when I get a better source player which will upconvert any video source to the displays' native 720p resolution; at least my audition/demo of this piece would be highly suggestive this would happen.
Follow Ups:
I have found that with my Sony XBR CRT 16:9 TV, I get the best DVD picture via DVI at 720p. I tried 1080i but to my eyes 720p was a better overall match for my setup. However, DVD player upsampled 1080i or 720p to the TV were both better than 480p.BUT.... the BEST looking picture comes from my HDTV tuner if the original content was shot in HD. Live HD broadcasts are also incredible and better than any upsampled DVD I've seen.
