I own three older Sony DVD players, mostly 1st and 2nd generation units. I also have two recent Denon DVD players and one that I sold about a year ago. I have a couple hundred DVD's including a couple dozen concert DVD's and have never ever experienced any lockups or other malfunctions. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Eltax is a Danish based company. It markets players that are all region free. I think Eltax is only avail in Europe.
I got the DV-100 (paid 100e/$). It is manufactured in China.
Also the manual shows how to make it region free!
All other models come set-up as region free out of the box.
Also, all models work on 110 or 220V. So quite universal!
