Investigate whether she is connected in through the component video outputs (Red Blue& Green plugs) to the TV or the composite video (yellow plug) output. If the latter she is probably up against the limits of what the simple composite video connection can do.
If her TV accepts component video input, you might solve the problem for a $20 set of Component video cables. If not, you ar probably out of luck, and she needs a more modern TV set that accepts component video input. The TV set may also be out of adjustment. Its unlikely there is a problem with the DVD player itself.
Follow Ups:
The connection is through composite video-the only choice on that tv.
The funny thing is, initially the credits at the end of movies were clear when the player was new. I'll check the tv settings.
