It seems that to take advantage of the new formats, my best bet is to rely on using the 7.1 analog outputs of the new formats.Or hopefully existing manufacturers of high end pre/pros will offer HDMI upgrades to the units.
Follow Ups:
The two Toshiba announced hd dvd players are limited to two lossless audio channels only, and 5.1 anaog outs, with three being used as regular DD/DTS.
The many upcoming BD players are a mixed bag as far as available info with the Pioneer Elite not being capable of at least one of the lossless audio formats until hdmi 1.3 capable receivers with on board decoding become available.
I have seen several people mention seeing 5.1- 7.1 analog outs on the upcoming Samsung, Sony BD player as well as the proto type Philips recorder/player at CES, and both are said to play cd, as well as an sa-cd logo on the Philips player/recorder.
None of this is official except for the Toshiba hd dvd players, and the Pioneer Elite BD player so far.I also saw it suggested that the upcoming announced BD special editions of Blackhawk Down, The Fifth Element, and the Bridge over River Kwai, could possibly use LPCM linear never compressed audio on these 50gb special edition discs, but theres no official announcement as to what kind of audio they will actually use other than lossless, and I am not holding my breath on linear audio soundtracks..
