Is there a simple machine (cheap) to transfer VHS tapes to a PC for later transfer to a DVD? Can anyone recommend a machine and price.Cut-Throat
Follow Ups:
First, take a look at the Canopus ADVC55 (approx. $200). This standalone unit connects your analog device (VHS, HI8, etc.) to your PC via firewire. You will need video capture software. You can probably use WinDV (freeware). I’ve used it and like it.Second, take a look at the Plextor ConvertX Digital Video Converter (approx. $125). This device will capture your analog material and automatically convert it to DivX, MPEG-4, MPEG-1/Video CD and MPEG-2/DVD formats (I don’t believe it captures to .avi).
Finally give some thought to getting a PC video card with capture capability. I’m not sure what your PC configuration is but you can probably find an ATI “All-In-Wonder” card (approx. $200+) to match your needs. I have an ATI 9600XT “All-In-Wonder” (but I use a Canopus ADVC 100 for my analog capture needs). Good luck.
