I had a Yamaha RX-V992 receiver packaged in its original packaging, in climate-controlled storage for the past 4 years. Everything I pulled out of storage worked great except for this, which is one of the few things I really wanted out of there. It keeps kicking into protection mode as soon as I turn it on. No wires are connected. In the user manual it says this could be caused by the impedence selector being in the wrong position, but that shouldnt matter since it has no speakers attached, but I tried it anyway.
To get it even evaluated for repair is gonna cost me 50-60$ which doesnt seem worth it. So, anyone have some tips or tricks for me to try?

I'm guessing that you tried to power it up just to test whether or not it would come on after storage. Did you ever power it up (when you first got it, years ago) without speakers connected? If so, did it not go into protection mode? If you did and it didn't, check for any frayed wires around the speaker terminals. Even a sliver touching two of the wrong terminals at the same time could trigger the protection circuit. Check the input (RCA) terminals as well.If all's clear, try connecting speakers to the proper terminals and see if it will power up correctly.
