Depending on your room size, you may want to go ahead with 6.1 or 7.1. Most receivers now probably include this, so if you are happy with 5.1 you could get a used one for a good deal.
Take a DVD player with 5.1 analog out.Receiver or AMP for L and R
Another Receiver or amp for RRear, and L rear
Another Amp or receiver for Center
A powered Sub.I have the above set up using vintage amps ( receivers ) bought at tag sales for $ 20.00 each. Case in point Yamaha CR 420 for $ 15 .
Plenty of Vintage speakers around also , cheap.You just have to adjust the volumes seperately, but it works fine.
