i tried a simple tweak on my cable tv box this weekend & it worked better than I could've imagined... this works for most of my stereo gear too: amps, preamps, turntable.I placed 3 - 2" square maple blocks under the cable tv box (a digital motorola from RCN cable in chi-town - DVR) & then a small brass weight from Mapleshade Records on top of the box, in the middle. You can try this for free by cutting a 2x4 into a few 2' blocks. but, if that works, do yourself a huge favor & get the good blocks & brass weight from mapleshade. the benefits are exponential. no affiliation whatsoever, just a happy customer.
the blocks are $2 each and the weight is $10 or so i think.
what you get is a huge decrease in high frequency glare, tons more deep & articulate bass, voices that are real (i did this just before the game the Cards won the Series) & your tv picture will be clearer with better color resolution. My 32" Toshiba CRT looks quite HD now..
Sunday night tv was so good, i had to post something.I watched Control Room last night too, about Al Jazeera, quite good.
i've never posted here, always in the audio asylums. the logic is that by draining internal vibrations from the gear it can operate at its best. $20 worth of tonewood footers & brass weights work magic on my cable box. commercials no longer jump out as loud, tv is alot more fluid sounding. I may even look into getting the music channels now, i wouldn't even had considered it before.
Follow Ups:
Never thought about trying them under the DCB but may give it a whirl. I like maple/butcher block amp stands/platforms too ;-)
however i just ordered a few more, and the price went up 2.5x...they are now $5 each. in fact, all of MS pricing went way up. kinda cool that all my brass weights & footers are worth more now though - like investing in a copper mine! be sure to add a little brass weight on top of the cable box when experimenting. i have 2 on top: one in the middle & one right over the cable inlet, probably overkill.so far the wood blocks have transformed - not just improved - my computer monitors (m-audio D-4), cable tv box, XBOX, channel islands VAC-1 psu and a '72 Marantz 1122dc integrated that i've been using while a new preamp is en route. I use their pointed brass footers under my turntable & amp...indispensible really.
i'm gonna need help lifting up the tv to get blocks to fit under it! ha!
check out www.timbernation.com for really high quality maple platforms. about the same price as mapleshade, but with deeper bass. ie, the dynamics in a 2" thick TN platform are in the same league as 4" MS platforms. Now they are 2 difft beasts, but when $ is a factor i'll take 2" TN boards all day long.
i tried both head to head, quite an eye opening experience.
