Hello,I have a Samsung TXN 3075WHF crt HD ready tv, and use a Denon DVD1600 player; the set is only used for movies from my dvd player. Since it doesn't have hdmi connections (I use the component connections with good cables) I am not able to use such players as the upscaling OPPO dvd players. But I understand there is a way to use one of their dvd players and have it upscale to 1080i via component cables (which is what my set will handle, that and progressive scan). Does anyone know how to make this work? Or am I already doing the best I can with regard to watching movies on this set?

Check the Denon's manual for whether or not it can upscale. My DVD 2910 offers upscaling but only on the HDMI output so you may not have the option at all on the 1600.Your TV is already upscaling the standard definition (480i or 480p) to whatever the TV's native resolution is. If the Denon offers you the option to upscale to the same resolution, then definitely try it and see whether or not you prefer the TV or the Denon doing the upscaling. Use the option that looks better to you.
If the Denon upscales, but not to the native resolution of your set (eg my Denon upscales to 720p or 1080i but the TVs native resolution is 1366 x 768 which doesn't match either of those options), then if you upscale in the Denon, the TV is still going to have to do a scaling option as well which means you're using 2 separate scaling operations. In my experience, that's worse than using standard def output from the Denon and relying on the TV to do the rest in a single scaling operation.

Thanks Dave!I don't believe the Denon offers the upscaling option, but I'll check.
I did end up calling Samsung, and they said the tv will upscale the 480p to 1080i. I'm thinking I am probably seeing the best the set has to offer. When I purchased the tv I found a post on the net that indicated internal adjustments that could improve the picture by way of the service menu, which I did. I think it's a pretty nice picture already, so maybe it's best to leave well enough alone! (Uhmm, what a thought!) Except for not being as sharp, it resembles more a plasma screen quality of picture then what we are getting on my wife's lcd hdtv - which is way sharper, but not quite as natural, or smooth as the crt picture. We'll see where the new technology about to be released takes us.
