HD DVD is doing well there now, but that can change. European studios prefer HD DVD due to having cheaper replicating costs. BD rules in Japan, due to their recording media.
Both formats are going to be around for quite a while, which is why I think Universal (dual) players are good for customers.

Combo players are nice for getting immediate gratification on whichever HD format the movie shows up on first, but Studios releasing movies in both formats (e.g. "PLanet Earth"), can't be good for store shelf space. Universal can end the format war NOW simply by releasing everything in Blu-Ray.
