You can definitely build a great system for $5000.00. For Wow factor, there are much cheaper subs than M&K. Try HSU research (VTF-2). This sub is low, with significant output. It's also great for music. Many are really hyped about SVS subs (require external amp). Shear output from these things is amazing on paper. Neither the HSU, nor the SVS will set you back more than $600.00.As for T.V.'s, I'd recommend Toshiba at the entry level (although Mitsubishi is fine as well). You can get a 40H80 rear projection, 16:9. Keep the room dark and buy a progressive scan DVD (or external line doubler) and you will be impressed.
Most of all, have fun shopping.
Here is some more suggestions from a previous post below:
Rotel RSP 976 -$650.00 (used)
5 Marantz blocks (MA 500 - 100 watts per) = $750.00 ($150.00 each used
PSB Image 5Ts (I'd recommend paradigm, but wanted to be different, besides PSB are more mellow and much "beefier" for HT - these suckers can be LOUD). - $600.00 (new) Also check out Diva Swans (they have center and surrounds coming out soon)
PSB 9C $400.00 (new)
PSB 3LR's $380 (new)
There. I just put together a system that will SLAM for under $3000.00.
