You could take a look at Harman/Kardon 2.1 They've been discontinued but great deals can still be found on net. I think onecall.com still has a couple of units left at around 650 or 700 (I bought mine as special pckg w/ 2.0 preamp for $1350 w/ shipping several months back). It's a steal at that price. It's a 120w x 5 and sounds very clean without a any added "coloration". Highly recommended and right within your price range.
