Since I have been burned bad by Panasonic and their total lack of customer service with regards to the A-310 I bought, I must chime in. (see audioreview.com's review of the Panasonic A310 and then decide if you ever want to buy anything from that lousy outfit again)Panasonic reliability and commitment to customer satisfaction not withstanding, I have seen several RP91's in action and must agree with the other Ed's assessment that the picture and sound quality are stellar. Industry benchmark even. However, the unit itself is IMHO, cheap, flimsy and mostly plastic.
My recommendation would be to get a Technics (Panasonic) A-10. If you are not stuck on the progressive scan feature, that's the unit that I feel is the the best thing available right now for the money. These originally listed for $1799. They are built like a brick s***-house, with all audiophile parts and components. 19lbs assures even the most skeptical that you've really bought a machine. Seperate power supplys for analog and digital circuits, 5.1 and DTS decoding, DVD-A, the whole enchilada. This unit is the nuts! And can now be had for <$329 on the web. Good luck!
Follow Ups:
Isn't that weird? You got burned by Panasonic but I have always had the best of luck with them. Never a failure in all the years I owned their products.
Sony, now there's a different story. Every time I buy something it breaks within months.
Pioneer and Technics both have also been very reliable for me.
Yeah, I have to admit that prior to the A310 episode, and truthfully subsequent to as well, I have had nothing but great experiences with Panasonic equipment. And I understand as well that from time to time, things just happen....poor design, bad lot of components, whatever. Problem I have with them is the same as all the 300 or so people that have negative reviews on Audioreview......absolutely p***-poor customer service.
