However I am interested to hear what others think and my thoughts are coloured by the picture we get here with PAL at 625 lines per inch - pun intended.FYI the HDTV situation in Australia is thoroughly confused and information on it scarce. We already have digital TV available on satellite (both pay & free to air) and digital TV is due to roll out on other broadcasts starting 2002. However most people here will not appreciate the difference with digital let alone HDTV, particularly those who seem happy to view absolutely appalling quality now!

Hi John: The situation is the same in Canada, where we have NTSC. In the US there is limited programming and only in large urban centres. Networks want the extra bandwidth to sell more cell phones, not to improve quality of TV.To answer the original question, unless you have planning on a progressive scan DVD, there is little reason to buy a HDTV right now. It will be about 5 to 10 years before it takes off, with enough programming to make worthwhile, if it does at all. Plus you have to deal with the bars at the sides or top& bottom. I have seen progressive scan tvs and they look great. As a plus you don't get fatigued as quickly watching progressive scan. I would go for something of that nature. Make sure it fits the space you have.
