In Reply to: What's your opinion on Sony VA777ES surround amp? posted by Arnel on November 13, 2001 at 10:33:36:
It also has a recall for being a fire hazard....
Look into it !!!!
No Dolby pro logic II or any upgrade ability.
And last but not least it is SONY - Need I say more.
Follow Ups:
Although I've been building my 2-channel system for a while, you can call me a newcomer to home theater. I've built quite a satisfactory music system around Sonus Faber Concertino Home speakers. And these speakers, together with a JMLab subwoofer, is the starting point of my venture into combined HT + music system. Here's what I'm not so clear about:
1. Is Sony's reputation with HT enthusiasts really that bad, at least in amplifier department? I've read some good things about Sony ES amps someplace else, not to mention the well-accepted and raved-about 9000ES SACD/DVD player.
2. Is there any Sony ES amp that replaces the VA777ES? I like the cool programmable touchpad remote in this model, btw.
3. What do you think of the SOUND of this VA777ES amp? Do you just hate the Sony marque or this one in particular? Btw, pls note I don't mind doing without ProLogic II, DTS ES, and SurroundEX coz I don't have the extra speakers anyway. :) For me, sound is more important and features just need to meet the standard DD and DTS baseline.
Thanks
Like all manufacturers, Sony has a mixed product line, but their ES offerings, particularly the separates, are unbeatable for the money. I have four TA-N9000ES amps and the matching E9000ES preamp. To show this bittersweet nature, the preamp took about two firmware upgrades to make it a respectable high-end product; now the firmware is up to v 2.5 and I am very happy. The amp has been stellar since its inception.I thin Sony has a DA5ES and a DA3ES receivers as the replacement.
