If you are purchasing your first player I'd have to recommend a Sony, let me explain. There are units in the same price-range or less that may have more and/or better quality, image, options or whatever. The Sony's have a rare warranty as I found out, complete 1yr parts and labor warranty. (Confirm this at purchase.) There is nothing more depressing than having a player for a few months, taking it to the shop for a warranty repair, and having to put out cash to get it back.
My Sony 360 is about 2yrs old and I've never had 1 problem with it. Granted, this is not my main player or even my back-up player, but it's currently at the In-Laws providing faithful service. Reasoning for this is due to the fact that we tried to get away with buying them an inexpensive player, and it S**t just out of warranty! We did not get it fixed because the repair center wanted half the cost of this “other brand” unit as an estimate fee. I used this situation as a reason to up-grade my own player and gave them my Sony, which was my primary player at the time.
I currently have a Modwright DVD-434 and a Panasonic DVD RV-65 in main system. The Modwright unit is the primary player for everything, but there are those occasions while listening to music, when you want a DVD video rolling in the background. Hence: two DVD players in the same system.
Enjoy,
Fish
