I am looking for advise on purchasing a 300-400 dollar DVD player.
I have read good reviews of the sony 700np with 12 bit/54mhz. I have
also seen ads for panasonic 24/192 DVD players. The sony SEEMS
to highlight the video portion of the product and the panasonic
seems to highlight the audio portion of the product. Any insight
would be helpful. I would rather have a better picture with a DVD
player over sound if it is a big enough difference. My current
TV only has svideo but it looks good enough currently not to trade
up for a few years. Am I at a price point that will get me more
or less quality with a few hundred more bucks spent.

Since you are going to be using the S-video cable and higher res audio is not important to you, I would suggest not spending more than 200-250 on a decent unit like the Pioneer DV-341 or the Sony DVP-NS300S. These units will give you excellent video performance and unless there is a feature you need like DD decoder or DVD-A support these players will be all that you will need.
don't spend too much time worrying about bit depth, the current generation of DVD players are all very good. find a progressive scan player from one of the larger brands (sony, panasonic, pioneer, marantz, etc). audio quality on most DVD players is very good, it's picture and features that seperate the brands.
