Since you are going to be using the S-video cable and higher res audio is not important to you, I would suggest not spending more than 200-250 on a decent unit like the Pioneer DV-341 or the Sony DVP-NS300S. These units will give you excellent video performance and unless there is a feature you need like DD decoder or DVD-A support these players will be all that you will need.

don't spend too much time worrying about bit depth, the current generation of DVD players are all very good. find a progressive scan player from one of the larger brands (sony, panasonic, pioneer, marantz, etc). audio quality on most DVD players is very good, it's picture and features that seperate the brands.
