What ratios are commonly available? I recently tried a player with 4x zoom. The picture appears to be twice as tall and twice as wide. The area in this case would be 4 times as large. Are zoom features specified by area? If so, does anyone offer lower ratios of 1.5x or 2x?

I'm not sure of the exact ratios, but my Toshiba (SD-2200) steps through three levels of zoom. The top one seems to be around 3-4x, so there's something in that ballpark...
At the lowest setting, can a widescreen picture be made to fill the screen of a 4:3 std TV without loosing too much of the picture?
