The AV8000 is approaching 3 years old. In the world of preamps/processors, this is very old.Have you considered something along the lines of an Outlaw Audio 950, which is supposed to go on sale very soon at under US$1000?
Ideally you'd want something with (minimally) DD/DTS and Dolby Pro-Logic, although Dolby Pro-Logic 2 is desirable.
The other thing to look for is a variable crossover, ie being able to select more than 1 crossover frequency. While most processors don't allow you to have an individual crossover for each set of speakers (fronts, center, surrounds) many allow you to chose the crossover frequency that best suits your system.
Another option that you might wish to consider that hasn't yet been mentioned, is purchasing a receiver and using that as a preamp/processor. While you're "wasting" money on the amplifier section, you'd also be able to purchase current technology.
IMO, DPL-2 is a nice advancement over DPL.
Hope this helped.
