Video Asylum

My son recieved a generous gift of a Sony Playstation 2 for Christmas (from Auntie, who is not an impoverished audiophile like her brother), and after set-up we noticed that the dvd playback goes back and forth from bright and clear to dark and wavy.

The Sony website forum has a few others who have noticed this problem, but there are no answers. Is this a defective unit, or is old dad just not able to find the magic formula?

Any help would be great, as I would hate to have to go through the return hassles...
