I'm on the verge of dropping big bucks on a 50 inch plasma for the overriding reason that I don't want a huge rptv between my speakers messing up my soundstage. Problem is there is no plasma dealer anywhere near me. Do the new plasmas have a good picture or will I be disappointed, and how do they compare to the best rptvs. I read a lot of conflicting opinions, some say they're great, others not say great. Thanks.

I agree with petew...Either the Panasonic or the NEC is the best choice. I've seen the Panasonic 50" and it is an outstanding picture. Probably the best video display I've ever seen for that "looking through a window" magic.
First, though, you should decide your priorities. A plasma will often look incredible with movies on DVD. However, they tend to look just average to poor with lower grade signals, such as cable...although some cable and satellite signals can look quite good.
In my experience, the larger the plasma, the more unforgiving it is with poor signals. The 42" plasmas are fantastic with DVDs and are relatively forgiving with poorer signals. The 50" plasmas have greater resolution (more pixels) and look even better with DVDs, along with being able to output a true HDTV signal - but they also *can* look a little worse with cable/sat.
I favor Panasonic models, but I've yet to see the NEC (most reports put it in the same league as Panasonic, and it costs less).
I've love to own a plasma myself.Rich H.
