You never need to select any kind of mode for the specific DVD movie you are watching. All DD material is automatically downconverted to stereo thru the analog outs of the DVD player, even when the DD5.1 output option is selected on the specific DVD movie's menu.bstan

Also, by playing certain music dvd's through the rca outs, you will benefit from the higher audio resolution that many dvd's offer. You might have to go into the dvd setup menu and tell the player to not down covert the higher resolution signals for dolby digital and dts. This will keep the pcm audio at the higher 48khz/16bit or the 96khz/24 bit sampling rates which in my opinion, put any cd player(high end or otherwise) to shame. I say enjoy, because dvd audio is special through the analoge outs. You WILL be impressed!!!
