I just posted this suggestion in another query. Denon has the new DVM 3800 listed on their website. The specs are impressive on paper and it supposedly will have true bass-management. But since it wont be out until April we won't know whether this is what many of us have been waiting for.
Since it is listed at a MSRP of $1199 the street price should come in right at your max.
The thing I like about the newer Denon players is their excellent audio quality.
