Context is everything. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, living rooms are small. These enrivons favor mini-monitors. And it's not like you can clear out the room; get rid of seating, shelves, and other furnishings; to make space for a larger speaker.
The vast majority of my relatives lives on Oahu. Many are in apartments, which, by definition, have dinky living rooms. And those fortunate enough to have a single family home with a large and/or open living room have multiple generations living there.
When we went off to college, we were housed in tiny dorm rooms, or had to cram multiple housemates into a typically small apartment. So once again, there was no room for larger speakers. And again, the coeds had no qualms, about using mini-monitors.
After college, even with good-paying jobs, adult kids returned home [above, my friend Kat (right) had to share a bedroom with her older sister]. And they may not have moved out, until they got married. Or worse, the in-law moves in, thus increasing the crowding. This is why, since the 2000s, audiophiles have reached out to me, asked for advice about downsizing the audio.
In the late-90s, I was still living at my parents' place, with its awful 15x15 living room. With the Thiel CS1.5 overloading the room, we were in audio hell.
But then my friend told her kid sister, "Stop being a p****. Just go ahead and jump!"
When the sister did jump, I ditched the male audiophiles. I ate the losses, got rid of the Thiel, and checked out mini-monitors.
It came down to either the ProAc Response One SC (above) or Totem M1S. For the room, both were infinitely better than floorstanders, such as the Thiel CS1.5, Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home, PSB Status Silver, and Martin Logan Aerius i. 28" stands elevated the mini-monitors above the furnishings. And without the Thiel's bass boom, we no longer did backstrokes up the couch.
Personally, large speakers are the product type I have not been able to review. I simply don't have the requisite room/space, to carry out fair and appropriate evaluations of larger speakers.
