Any one of those girls could be my housemate. Just don't tell my wife that she's living here.
When I was in music school, I had a piano for a couple of years, and a decent stereo system. There was one girl in particular who would come over quite often to practice her Beethoven sonatas. Occasionally, she'd just be wearing her bra and panties. I was ok with that.
The stereo speaker cabinets were basically homemade, built by a friend's dad who was a a cabinet maker. Nothing special, just decent-looking and utilitarian. I probably have a photo of them, somewhere. But, to the point, the piano overwhelmed the room, sound-wise. Which reminds me of the piano professor's house - where he had a nine foot Steinway in his living room. And, it wasn't a large living room. You had to walk around the piano to go anywhere. I don't remember what he had for a stereo system, so, my guess is that it wasn't anything really great, 'cause all I remember is the giant piano.
Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah: Bass.
In order to produce sound, a loudspeaker needs to oscillate air. In order to produce sound at a particular frequency at a particular SPL at a particular distance, "x" amount of air needs to be moved. For a given diaphragm diameter, it needs to move "back-and-forth" a specific distance in order to produce the desired SPL. In addition, in order to accurately reproduce an input signal, the loudspeaker diaphragm must start and stop appropriately, ideally exactly following the input signal. We all know that loudspeakers don't follow waveforms perfectly.
You can have a small diaphragm move a large distance, or, you can have a large diaphragm move a small distance.
The problem with large speakers in a small room isn't that they have large "woofers". it's that they are large speakers! The source is too large to integrate three or four drivers before arriving at the listener(s). That's why 2-way speakers often sound better in small rooms, although they also generally need a "subwoofer" or two.
