the story of a 13-year old girl pressed into service after the town's teacher must leave. To earn her pay, she must not lose one student, a daunting task considering the hard-scrabble existence and the almost necessity of having each family member in the agrarian community contribute to survival.
Not a fist-fight, car chase, or bullet shot in anger but you will, if you have an open mind, find the tension quite intense as she fights against lackadaisical students, unconcerned parents, and corrupt officials to try and teach the students, to give them an opportunity at more than survival farm skills. The young actress, on whom the success of the picture rests, is up to the challenge: this is an Oscar worthy performance w/out any recourse to darting eyes, exaggerated hand gestures, or over-emoting. Quiet. Unforgettable. Effortless. Utterly believable.

I mentioned here a few months ago that it put me in mind of 'The Bicycle Thief' for some reason...I think it's just the honesty of the acting (living, breathing, really existing) that is shown in this film and the simple yet deeply complicated story.
Really brilliant film.
I much prefer this era of Yimou's work.

From Red Sorghum through this film his record really is brilliant.
Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, Raise The Red Lantern, The Story Of Qiu Ju, To Live, The Road Home, Not One Less...outstanding. Heroes and House Of Flying Daggers are quite striking, but not my favorites of his.
The Zhang Yimou productions for the opening and closing ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics were AMAZING.

follow up, a sweet little romance, The Road Home, is sterling as well. Just beautiful.
His output is incredible. Almost a film a year for two decades and all worth seeing.

apart from his latter big-budget CGI hubris like 'House of Flying Daggers' and 'Curse of the Golden Flower'.
(Hero was ok though, there was a poetic bend to it.)
...right, the latter work is too big for its britches. No doubt made for a different audience. American?
I still can have a good time watching all the excess built into that later stuff but it doesn't measure up to the likes of the two mentioned above. I silently play along ala MST3K.
Notwithstanding his "corruption", I still follow and see his work.
Looky here at an old comment..
Not once resorting to saccharine or emotional string pulling but pulling us in all the same. Utterly simple but utterly compelling and brilliant film making IMO.
I really cared about what happened to these people and I admit that Thuy' and I both shed a few tears during this film but not Hollywood (Sandra Bullock) tears.
