follow up, a sweet little romance, The Road Home, is sterling as well. Just beautiful.
His output is incredible. Almost a film a year for two decades and all worth seeing.

apart from his latter big-budget CGI hubris like 'House of Flying Daggers' and 'Curse of the Golden Flower'.
(Hero was ok though, there was a poetic bend to it.)
...right, the latter work is too big for its britches. No doubt made for a different audience. American?
I still can have a good time watching all the excess built into that later stuff but it doesn't measure up to the likes of the two mentioned above. I silently play along ala MST3K.
Notwithstanding his "corruption", I still follow and see his work.

Not once resorting to saccharine or emotional string pulling but pulling us in all the same. Utterly simple but utterly compelling and brilliant film making IMO.
I really cared about what happened to these people and I admit that Thuy' and I both shed a few tears during this film but not Hollywood (Sandra Bullock) tears.
