First, don't fall from that white horse and try not to speak for ALL Americans.Most importantly, you are completely off base equating the concerns of "average Americans" with burning desire of some idle idiot to screw his daughter's friend. Sorry, you are dreaming wrong dreams.
So if you want to stay at that naive "story" level, then the characters and the story in that film are as real as any other of Hollywood's endless rows of pale caricatures that they had created since their "revelation".
That "revelation" has to do with the discovery back in the 50's that "normal" people do not interest viewers.
Here we had one major bifurcation point: while most of the European and Asian cinematography continued to study the one and only endless source of inspiration and discoveries - the HUMAN nature - Hollywood turned faster and faster in the direction of becoming a mass-production factory of comic-book-level super-and-under-heroes that would instantly catch the attention of the buying crowd and generate higher cash flows.
So while to someone like Bergman there was never any shortage of subject and fascination in a human being study, Hollywood had quickly become a junkie, where nothing was enough any longer, and any new fix had to be more shocking and more strong than all previous ones.
What we have now is mosly plastic cliche characters and the ever-accelerating race for more special effects: more and more dumb aliens and characters (I am using this term losely here) like that Lester idiot.
So the sort answer to your statement - Lester has as much in common with some "average American" as the Alien III creature with the groundhog.
