Home Films/DVD Asylum

Movies from comedy to drama to your favorite Hollyweird Star.

Sorry, but it wasn't that bad, Shepherd's opinions notwithstanding; how about your's?

My wife and I saw this film last weekend with few expectations (i.e., having seen the ads and not having been impressed with two of Will Smith's "blockbuster" efforts in recent years, MIB II & Wild Wild West. However, we were pleasingly surprised by this film in spite of it's flaws and failure to faithfully translate one of Asimov's seminal works to the silver screen. In fairness to Proyas, the film did not start out being based on Asimov's I, Robot. He apparently took the project with the condition that he could acquire the rights to Asimov's work because and move the storyline in that direction. Note: The original greenlighted screenplay was titled Hardwired, if I'm not mistaken.

I, Robot as completed makes no bones about being "suggested" by an idea of Isaac Asimov, so there is little to mislead the viewer that it's only loosely based on Asimov's concepts; in fact, I'm surprised that there's as much of Asimov as there is in the film! On it's own, the movie works just fine as popcorn entertainment; I suspect that when I, Robot is released on DVD it will also be an enjoyable to demo for friends. Sure, this film isn't perfect and has a number of cliches associated with the genre, but at least it doesn't have the plot-holes, continuity gaffs and plausibility failings of a terrible film like Minority Report, which was based on a classic SF short story by Phillip K. Dick.

This is just my (informed) opinion, of course; YMMV, ...if you ever see the film for yourself! ;^)
