Divided We Fall

This Czech film in some way will inevitably remind you of The Pianist. A Jew seeking a refuge in occupied Europe, and people whose hearts are greater than their fears.

It is not a Hollywood crowd pleaser, like The Pianist, and Divided We Fall tells the story of ordinary people... not heros. If The Pianist is a grand sysmphony, Divided We Fall is a chamber work. It is smaller and less impressive in nearly every respect, but it also manages to stir strong emotions. Inspite of all its weaknesses it speaks directly and truthfully, and that is its strongest point.

Wonderful performances by Anna Siskova, and Bolek Polivka, who plays her all-too-human husband... he reminded me a lot of Jupp... Patrick!

Not grandiose, but humanist and perhaps even more truthful than the "based on true story" The Pianist.
