Nearly every other aspect of this film works extremely well and there was real chemistry between the actors. The Illusionist is a lushly filmed, well acted drama set in the late 19th century.Possible spoiler alert (if concerned, skip over the next paragraphs)...

That said, the use of certain overly realistic special effects to convey what appear to be supernatural occurances take those scenes well outside the realm of stage magic in the 19th century.
I just felt that in order for the climax to have a more plausible payoff the Director and/or effects coordinator should've insisted upon slightly hazier B&W images (instead of using full motion, in color images, with cognitive reactions) for a rawer, spookier, more ethereal effect in those scenes.

In spite of the caveat mentioned above, this is truly an outstanding film, perhaps even Oscar worthy (if not for the film itself, for the acting)! Those who have seen it know which scenes I'm refering to and may or may not concur with my impressions, but regardless, everyone curious obout The Illusionist would be well advised to purchase tickets ASAP, before this movie disappears in a bit of less than magical box-office slight of hand. As Monk would say, ..."You'll thank me later." :o)FTR, we'll be purchasing The Illusionist DVD when it comes out; this one's a keeper!
