I recently saw this movie, just by luck, because the reviews waived me off when it was in popular release. FRom the poster, and the critics, I figured this was space epic that misfired.
THey were wrong, this is the story of this one man, and his personal journey . It is not a slick space epic, like 2001. Just the opposite , it is shot with a lot of tech action, the space capsules creak and groan with alarming reality But it is also a story about a guy and his wife . Not coastal people, they didn't express much outwardly, and the actors put this over, but you have to pay attention ,
Let me put ii this way. IT opens with a shaky 16 mm black and white documentary looking footage from the pilots seat if an X15 flight , you can't see out the viewports, too much action, and the x15 is not identified ,you are just thrown into the action . The film slows down enough to get you oriented in the cockpit, then the x15 is dropped.
When the engines hit, the screen returns to movement and acceleration . Then our hero reaches apex , the images are clear now, ut he can't get back down, he is bouncing off the atmosphere. A mostly true story of an engineer and test pilot , really two movies knitted together, a family story and a tech saga of exploration and risk. The opening shot was enough for a thumbs up from me, but the entire film is engaging and well done, telling a heck of a story.
Those two parts were the challenge for the director, fitting them together. The actors said their biggest challenge was saying true to characters, as explained by family and friends.
I got a second chance to see this on the big screen, and am glad I didn't miss it.
The film is nominated for some award, so It returned for a showing with a little question and answer with the director, surprisingly young, and the two lead actors,
